Course history

The course was opened in 1972 by the legendary boxer, Sir Henry Cooper, and designed by F.W. Hawtree, of the world-renowned golf architectural firm, Hawtree and Sons.

Among Hawtree & sons many worldwide projects, probably the most high profile was the complete re-development of Royal Birkdale. Others included Sunningdale & Vilamoura.

His father, Frederick George, was a pioneer of golf architecture and set up a company to design golf in 1912 with partner and veteran Open Champion J.H. Taylor (Co-founders of the NAPGC)

F.W. Hawtree has also designed courses in France, Belgium, Spain, the United States, South Africa, Ireland and Portugal.

F.W. Hawtree also penned several books on golf architecture including:

  • The Golf Course: Planning, Design, Construction and Management (Routledge, 1983);
  • Colt and Co., Golf Course Architects: A Biographical Study (Cambuc Archive, 1991).
